why do you think children from this region were sent around New Zealand?
Children were sent around new Zealand because there were no homes or schools for them to go to and to homes for them to live in and children can get in the way of the clean up making it messier and it wasn't that safe for children as there were many aftershocks.

The earthquake killed 256 people in total.
99 year old Nola Manly was 9 at the time
people had to live in tents

-Naiper was very damaged during the first earthquake mainly caused by fire

-Fire started in two pharmacies

-6% of the population were taken out of the city, mostly women and children were taken south
-Water supply stopped an hour after the earthquake
-Took weeks for the sewage to begin going again
-The railways to wellington were restored 2 days after
-The navy helped clean up the demolished buildings
-300 boys at the school and were thrown out the building.
-The next day one boy was rescued cheerful but angry
-The nurses building collapse and many night nurses were killed (they used to give the overnight nurses a nurse house to sleep in since they worked over night)
