Christchurch Earthquakes

 Christchurch Earthquakes

I know that it was earthquakes that happened on the 22nd of February 2011, lots of buildings collapsed and a handful of people died,

I think i will find out how many people died, if anyone survived the broken buildings, and how many buildings broke.

1. Because it happened during the early hours of the morning, and most people were home, asleep.

2. 6659 people got injured in the earthquake

3. Liquefaction is Sand, water, and Mud all mixed together, and breaks up through the ground and brakes many things in it's road, including Roads, and underground pipes that also looks like just ripples of water in a flood once on the ground.

4. 115 people died inside of the CTV building when it collapsed

 5. Big, Large, Massive.

Notes

- For years scientists expected the earthquake, they just didn't know when it would happen

- The breaking of rocks is what causes earthquakes.

- The huge earthquake was a 6.3

- No one knew there was a fault in the port hills

- The port hills fault lifted the ground up 4cm

Reflection;

I am learning about the Christchurch Earthquakes.

This work shows my learning because it's about the Christchurch Earthquakes.

I am wondering if any bodies, dead or alive, flew out of the buildings when they were falling.

I got all of my predictions correct, it is about the Earthquakes in Christchurch on the 22nd of February 2010

Pike River Mine Explosion

Pike River Mine Explosion,  Nov, 19th 2010.

I think it's gonna be about a mine cavern that exploded in New Zealand on November the 19th 2010.

I think i will find out if anyone died / how many people died, and how/why it happened.

1. The Pike River Mine is located the West Coast of South Island of New Zealand

2. The building of the mine started in 2005 but the actual mining started in November, 2008

3. 31 Men were inside the mine at the time of the explosion.

4. Two Men escaped the mine explosion, the the 29 died inside the mine

5. Because it was far too dangerous to send human searchers into the mine to find the bodies, so instead they sent in robots.

6. Jacinda Adern made a promise to unseal and re-enter the mine, also going to send in a searching team to see what or who they could find, but it failed, they couldn't.

Videos;

Video #1

-One of the survives tells people that he ducked behind the door of the loader to avoid falling rocks.
-Russel was left for dead by an electrician who saw him lying on the ground
-Another survivor, Daniel rescued Russel and helped him escape
-They turned on taps to help clear the smoke
-Daniel and Russel are the only two who got out,
-Daniels younger brother of 21 years, didn't make it out of the mine
-They still don't know why the mine exploded

Video #2

-The mine was extremely gassy but no one thought it wouldn't explode that's why they entered
-Russel felt more peaceful before he passed out
-In the mines the miners were trained that mine rescuers would save you so you should wait to be rescued
-The people blamed the corporation for the explosion and the 29 deaths.
-People were mad at the manager at the time (Ben and Daniels father, Ben died)
-Daniel has a wife (Tammy)

Reflection
I am learning about the Pike River Mine Explosion
This work shoes my learning because it is about the Pike River Mine Explosion
I am wondering if anyone did survive, even thought i know that is impossible to find out
I got all my predictions correct about what happened and when it happened.

Extra from the extra reading thingy

Notes
- The explosion happened Friday 19th Nov 2010
- The planning started in 2005
- The mine opened in 2008 and was almost shut down due to the gas
- On the day of the explosion at 3:44 Ben (Daniels brother) was deep into the mine whilst Daniel and Russell were closer to the top.
- The company was ordered to pay $110,000 to each family but could only afford to pay $5,000 to each family due to the fact it had to be shut down because they couldn't sell coal
- The coal in Pike River Mine was discovered in 1946 but the planning for the mine started in 2005
- Jacinda Adern promised to re-open the mine and re-enter to find the bodies.
- The Pike River Mine explosion was the worse mine disaster in New Zealand since 1914.

Questions

there was too much gas and it almost made the mine shut down once it first opened in 2008

That the mine had violated multiple health and safety codes/rules, and that the explosion had been caused by the ignition of a large volume of methan.
Because the two men that did escape, Daniel and Russell, were closer to the opening of the mine, and both had something that helped them, ducking behind something or for Russell he was in the cab of the truck.

-

1. The first person to discover coal in the paparoa ranges was Harold Wellman
2. The prime minister promised that she would open and re-enter the mine.
3. The Pike River Mine is located on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand.
4.the explosion happened the 10th of November 2010
5. The reason was that the company was broke because they were unable to sell any more coal.

Two questions i had once reading the article was, 'why didn't they close it in 2008 when the gas almost shut it down the first time' and 'what if there were more people down there that they didn't register'

The Mount Eberus Plane Crash; November 28th, 1979

The Eberus Plane Crash; November 28th, 1979

I think this disaster will be a plane crash on the 28th of November 1979, and there are no survives, and it crashes into snow.

I think i will find out where it happened and how people were on the plane, why no one survived, why were they in Antarctica.

1. IT was heading on a sight seeings trip around Antarctica, seeing McMurdo sound, Scott base,

2. Captain Jim Collins and co-pilot first officer Greg Cassin

3. So passengers could get a better view of the outside, not knowing he was flying into a mountain.

4. The flight path had been changed but the pilot and co-pilot hadn't been told, and they couldn't see where they were going because of the white out, meaning they couldn't tell the difference between the land and the sky.

5. The crash happened at 12:49 PM on Wednesday November 28th 1979, but it took till 1:25AM to find the remainder of the crash.

-

Video #1

-is the worst new Zealand air disaster
-the plane picked up people from both Auckland and Christchurch
-There were two flight engineers
-there were five flight crew and 15 fight attendants
-the navigation doesn't work as well near the earths poles
-the Erebus mountain is an active volcano
-international navigation system (INS)
-they were only supposed to go down to 6,000 feet but they went down to 450 feet.
-they were 30/40 feet away from where they thought they were

Video #2

-It took off from Auckland at 8:00 AM
-IT made a 45 minute stop at Christchurch to pick up more people
-$359 per person for the sightseeing plane
-There were 237 passengers aboard the plane
-2,000 feet of snow
-They said that they should go down to 1,500 ft
-It thought the snow was still clouds
-they circle twisted whilst descending
-unknown to the crew the aircraft was flying towards Erebus mountain, since it is covered in snow it is hard for the crew to see it.
-12:49 the alarm tells them to pull up
-they tried to turn the plane around but were unable to as it was to late.
-The aircraft broke and caught fire

We are learning about the Eberus Plane Crash,

This work shows my learning because its stuff i learnt about the plane crash

I am wondering how everyone died, like they can't have all died from impact, some probably bleeding out and stuff.

Looking back on my predictions i was correct about what it was and the date and time.

The Wahine, April 10th 1968

 The Wahine

I believe this is about a ship on April 10th 1986 that sunk among the water

I think I will find out the time that it happened, what happened to the people aboard the ship, and how it happened

1. The weather was very bad having two huge storms
2.The Wahine was going to wellington harbour
3.Only three lifeboats, as only four could be released and one of them sinking immediately
4.The rest were forced to jump in the water and swim to shore
5.Rescuers were unable to get to shore because there was things blocking the road
6.In total 53 people died.

-The wreck sunk deeper into the harbour
-The ship was carrying 68 cars and 25 tons of general cargo
-It also had 144 bags of mail aboard
-The harbour was closed early that morning
-Skin divers went out to the wreck that day to get a good look at the ship
-There had been a report from one rescue craft that tapping had been heard coming from inside the house
-They checks all around the ship inside and out but found nothing
-Skin divers later that had investigated the wreck have found there is no sign of survivors aboard
-All available police had been working around the harbour that day

-The Wahine laid on its side by the wellington harbour
-46 bodies were found dead
-6 people were not found
-566 passengers and 110 crew were safe
-Some police think that the number missing may increase
-The search continued for at least another two days

Reflection

I am learning about the Wahine, that sunk in 1968
This work shows my learning because its a reflection on what i have learnt about the Wahine
I am wondering how many people are still alive today that was on that ferry and if they ever went on another ferry
Looking back on my predictions i got the date and what had happened correct

The Tangiwai Rail Disaster

This week we are learning about the Tangiwai Rail Disaster

My prediction / what i already know is that it is a railway / train disaster on the 24th of December 1953 (Christmas eve) in Tangiwai and something to do with Lahar

I think I will find out what time it happened, and how it happened, and how many people were on the train and how many people died

---

1. 258 people were on the train
2. The Larah began at the top of Mt Ruapehu
3. It took place on the 24th of December 1953
4. There was a man waving a torch
5. The queen gave out medals for peoples bravery
6.  An early warning system about the Whangaehu river was installed in 2007

---
-The driver braked but it was to late for 5 carriages
-Christmas day awoke to the news that 151 people died

- 21 dead people unidentified

-Mt. Ruapehu ring of fire
-Is a very active volcano / one of the most in the world
-Snow covers the mountain
-1945 Mt. Ruapheu sent Larah down the mountain
-The ice that covers the crater lake begins to melt once its summer
-Around 6:00 pm the train came through Palmerston
-The ash walls around the glacier / crater lake gave out and the water and ice pouring down the mountain.
-It was a wellington to Auckland express
-The driver didn't know that the bridge was destroyed at the time
-The train didn't stop in time
-One first class and four second class carriages fell into the gab in the bridge taking 176 passengers with them
-The other six on the bridge was still connected to the first five in the water
-Only one person in the sixth carriage died, she was trapped under a seat and died because of impact.
-Some bodies were washed into the river never to be found again
-Only two people survived of carriage 3
-The river slowly dropped allowing more people to get out of the sunken train
-You could make out what was left of carriages
-A bunch of children toys were washed up around the river bank
-The remaining survivors were put on a train and sent to Hamilton where relatives would meet them.

Reflection

I am learning about the Tangiwai Rail Disaster
This work shows my learning because its facts about the disaster
I am wondering if you go into the lake that there is a possibility that you could find old bones from the missing people
Looking back at my prediction i got it right about being a railway disaster and that is involved Lahar and the date.

The Ballantynes Fire - Nov 18th 1974

This blog post is about the Ballantynes Fire - Nov 18th 1974

What do I think I already know

I know it was a fire in Ballantynes on Nov 18th 1974.

What do I think I will about this disaster?

What caused the fire, how they fixed it, and how they stopped it,  did people die is so how many, is it the same building or re built, how long it took to stop it

Read and research

1. Ballantyne's was an exclusive store because there were expensive designer with ladies who wore hats and gloves and served by waitresses with aprons and caps

2. The Ballantynes department store in Christchurch

3. November 18th 1947 at 3:46 pm

4. The workers weren't told there was a fire because they haven't finished their shift yet a plus they didn't have a fire alarm or evacuation plan and the downstairs and the downstairs workers thought it was only a cellar fire not bothering to tell the upstairs workers

5. 41 employees died, two women jump from the verandas and was unconscious but recovered

6. No smoking inside, no walking past fire's, tell others, they have smoke alarms and now have a evacuation plan.

---
Video notes

Worst fire in new Zealand's history,

46 people missing in addition to those dead

Fire started in basement of the furniture department at 4:46 pm

Few shoppers at that time

Employees mainly on 2nd and 3rd floor about 300 people worked in this space

Neighbouring shops were cracked by the heat and power lines came down

Army and air force helped the firemen, Navy helped with the crowd control

They sprayed/pumped water for 4 hours from 36 hoses

-------

The trapped were waving down to people passing in the streets for help before the fire engulfed them killing them

They began investigating

They had 25 minutes before the first flames were seen

Spring of 1947

This resource wasn't useful because it was too long, and you couldn't hear the audio very well

Reflection

I am learning where the worst fire in New Zealand happened, how it happened, how many people were killed or trapped in the fire, and any other little piece of information

This work shows my learning because it shows the notes off of the videos we have watched about the Ballantynes fire and a poster of information I had made.

In a result on this learning I am wondering how long it took them to rebuild the building.

Looking back at my prediction I got it right that it was a fire but I got wrong I thought at first Ballantynes was a little town or city but learnt that it is a store / department place in Christchurch
